Enjoy Home Decorating Yourself

By Jeanette Joy Fisher

Don't Hire Someone to Steal Your Joy: Decorate Your Home Yourself!

In researching what makes people happy, I discovered that "Planning" makes us happy. Therefore, why should a homemaker turn over planning to an interior designer? Furthermore, most designers don't study the psychology of interior design.

Most of us enjoy looking daydreaming about our perfect home. Do you ever think about your home just before falling to sleep? Instead of worrying about your tasks for tomorrow, try this exercise tonight: imagine you're arriving home. What do you see that greets you? Think about easy changes or additions you can make that would make you smile when you get that first glimpse of home. Perhaps a few white flowers planted by the walkway or a refreshing tropical fern by the door or....

Think about your front door. Could a fresh coat of paint in a happy color help you feel joy? Open the door and what do you see that immediately greets you? What can you do so that the first glance makes you feel happy to be at home? Now, where do you go when you arrive home? Run to the bathroom? Do you have children clinging to you? Bags of groceries to put away?

Each of us have a ritual, whether we're conscious of it or not, when we come home. Try to envision changes that you can make to achieve a harmonious home coming. Besides the organizational changes, home decorating changes can help you, too.

Keep daydreaming about your spaces and visualize your desired changes. Think about how you want your spaces to make you feel. For instance, if you want your kitchen to make you feel organized, you could take out cluttering accessories and repaint the walls a calming silver green. Maybe your dining area needs a facelift to bolster family conversations and a new large mirror would reflect family togetherness.

I bet when you do this exercise that you fall asleep before you get to your bedroom in your dreams.

Most home makers love the search for that perfect accessory, daydreaming about colors for our rooms, and planning a new look for our home.

You know yourself best. Don't give all the happy moments of planning and choosing decorating details to paid professionals. Reserve the enjoyment of daydreaming and designing your home for yourself.
