Clinical Psychology Office Design

Note from Jeanette: I get ten times the calls from psychologists than from interior designers.

How to Create a Clinical Psychology Office Your Clients Will Love

by Jeanette Fisher

After years of college and preparation, you're ready to open a clinical psychology practice. You know how to talk to distressed people, but do you know how to design your office to support your client's emotions? How do you furnish your office?

You don't need to go back to school. Design Psychology will help you reach your goals to uplift, restore, and heal your clients through simple but specific application/alterations in your office space. Design Psychology, based on scientific research, helps create environments to stimulate desired emotional outcomes through the use of a design plan formulated specifically for clients' psychological needs. Design Psychology employs an understanding of the way human senses respond to specific decorating details. Designers change and influence the atmosphere with decorating details based on knowledge of the client's lifestyle needs, including support for emotions, creativity, and productivity.

You can use the theories of Design Psychology to instill harmony in your clinical psychology office. First, you need to think about your clients' psychological needs in relation to your office space. You and your clients benefit from a soothing atmosphere which promotes calmness, relaxation, and uplifting joy. To support your clients' emotions, think about their five senses. Then choose design details and furnishings which shore up the senses for the desired emotional support.
